Overview

Description

The iW780 protocol IC is a highly flexible and programmable AC/DC interface controller that supports USB Power Delivery (PD) 3.1 and multiple D+/D- protocols. The device integrates protocol support, secondary-side regulation control and a USB Type-C® disconnect FET controller into one device for single-port and multi-port adapter designs.

The device pairs virtually with all of Renesas’s primary-side controllers including the iW9860, iW9801, and iW9802, enabling power supplies for fast charging up to 240W output power.  With its integrated intelligence, the iW780 automatically enters a low power state at no-load to enable zero standby power solutions when paired with the iW9860 or the iW9870.  For even higher efficiency, the device can be paired with the iW610 secondary-side synchronous rectifier controller to further increase active-mode efficiency.

Designed for multi-port applications, multiple iW780 devices can be used to control additional DC/DC converter stages on the secondary side, such as the ISL81401 or ISL8117, providing true multi-port solutions at power levels between 60W and 240W.  The iW780 has several protection features and uses fully digital voltage compensation to eliminate the need for external passive components for loop compensation.
