Overview
Description
This USB Power Delivery (PD) charger battery management system (BMS) is designed to support high-efficiency charging for multi-cell battery packs, delivering up to 240W in compliance with USB PD 3.1 Extended Power Range (EPR). The system integrates a USB Type-C® Port Controller (TCPC), an I2C-connected MCU-based Type-C Port Manager (TCPM), a high-voltage buck-boost charger, and a battery front-end (BFE) with fuel gauging for system health monitoring.
The 140W charger battery management system features a 30V buck-boost charger designed for 3- to 4-cell battery packs. It supports USB PD EPR and integrates a BFE with a built-in fuel gauge for simplified system monitoring. This mid-power design is ideal for compact applications requiring efficient charging and reliable battery diagnostics.
The 240W charger battery management system supports higher-voltage 3- to 10-cell battery configurations using a 48V buck-boost charger. The default firmware supports 6–10 cell packs, while 3–5 cell support is available with a firmware update. This system features two battery management options:
- A BFE with an integrated fuel gauge and built-in MCU, capable of operating independently. In this setup, the external MCU (also acting as the TCPM) polls the device over I2C for battery data.
- A BFE-only IC, which offers a lower-cost, more flexible alternative. It requires external configuration and management via I2C, relying more on the system MCU for control and monitoring.
System Benefits:
- Complies with USB Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.1 and supports AVS/PPS.
- Offers selectable power roles: Dual Role Power (DRP), Sink (SNK) only, or Source (SRC) only.
- Includes autonomous detection and action capabilities.
- Utilizes a single MCU communication solution.
- Ensures robust battery safety and management.
- Supports charging systems with up to 10 cells.
- Provides optional BMS boards for enhanced battery safety and activity management.
