TOKYO, Japan, November 22, 2010 — Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723), a premier supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, today announced its plan to open a new branch in Bangalore, India, in January 2011 with the aim of expanding the company's overseas semiconductor business, particularly in emerging markets such as India. Renesas Electronics recently opened a new branch in Melbourne, Australia as well.
With its rapidly increasing population, India is expected to see a continuing expansion in the use of electronic devices, such as white goods, consumer goods, and automobiles. As a result, local enterprises in these fields are also expected to experience remarkable growth. Against this background of vibrant domestic demand, the semiconductor market in India is expected to grow by an average of approximately 15 percent per year. Furthermore, India has now become a hub of the information technology (IT) and software industries with numbers of multinational corporations (MNCs) including IT companies and automakers setting up their R&D facilities. Therefore, in addition to promoting sales in the Indian market, Renesas Electronics considers it to be essential to support customers in India with their design development. In particular, Bangalore, where the new branch will be located, is the home where major IT companies, including both international IT enterprises with worldwide facilities and India's leading local IT enterprises, are based.
Renesas Electronics currently has a liaison office in Bangalore, and in light of the anticipated future expansion of the market, the company decided to establish a full-scale branch in Bangalore to provide customers in India with dedicated service and support. The new Indian branch will be a branch of Renesas Electronics Singapore Pte. Ltd., (a wholly owned subsidiary of Renesas Electronics Corporation) that oversees sales and marketing operations in Southeast Asia, South Asia and Oceania. The India branch will undertake sales, marketing and technical support for the Indian market, with a particular focus on microcontrollers (MCUs) for use in white goods and automobiles. It also will investigate the requirements of customers in the Indian market and supply semiconductor solutions tailored to that market.
With a strengthened sales, marketing, and technical support organization provided through the newly established branch, Renesas Electronics expects to further expand its business in India by exceeding the average market growth rate and achieving an average annual growth rate of over 20 percent.
In addition, Renesas Electronics' liaison office in Australia has been superseded by a new branch of Renesas Electronics Singapore, which started operation on November 10 with the goal of strengthening support for the Australian market. Renesas Electronics aims to continue the expansion of its MCU sales mainly for automobiles in the Australian market.
Renesas Electronics has been working to boost sales in overseas markets, with an emphasis on emerging markets, and the establishment of new branches in India and Australia is part of this effort. Renesas Electronics aims to increase the overseas sales ratio from the current 50 percent to 60 percent in FY2012.
