TOKYO, Japan, May 17, 2010 -- Renesas Electronics Corporation (TSE: 6723) today announced that its semiconductor design subsidiary in Vietnam, Renesas Design Vietnam Co., Ltd., has been named by Ministry of Planning and Investment of Vietnam as a recipient of the Excellence Award (Note 1).
Ministry of Planning and Investment of Vietnam has been presenting the Excellence Award to acknowledge and honor success of foreign-invested enterprises in Vietnam and their outstanding contribution to the development of society and economics in Ho Chi Minh City for the period of five years. At the ceremony held on May 14 in Ho Chi Minh, Ministry of Planning and Investment presented a Certificate of the Excellence Award to representatives of eleven award-winning companies located at Ho Chi Minh City Export Processing and Industrial Zones, including Renesas Design Vietnam.
Renesas Electronics established Renesas Design Vietnam in 2004 as the first semiconductor design center in Vietnam. Renesas Design Vietnam started out with 30 employees and expanded by more than 16-fold over the next five years as a result of proactive recruitment of local employees and promotion of training programs. Today, the company has grown into Renesas Electronics' largest design center outside Japan with approximately 500 designers. Renesas Design Vietnam designs system-on-chip (SoC) products for a wide range of applications including home appliances and automobiles, and its products are adopted by customers all over the world. Renesas Design Vietnam has also built up strong relationship with local universities. As part of its contribution to develop semiconductor engineers in Vietnam, the company offers semiconductor design courses and several technical seminars at several universities in Vietnam and has been co-sponsoring MCU Car Rally competition (Note 2) for the past four years, in partnership with Ho Chi Minh City University of Sciences. Renesas Design Vietnam was awarded for its contributions to the IT industry in Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh City over the years.

(Note 1) Excellence Award: The official name is “Excellence Award in appreciation of outstanding contribution to the development of society and economics in Vietnam for the period of five years”.
(Note 2) MCU Car Rally competition: MCU Car Rally is a speed race in which miniature cars incorporating Renesas Electronics' microcontroller (MCU) for program design in collaboration with Renesas Design Vietnam software program designed by the individual teams. The cars will then automatically run a predetermined course, competing for the best time. It is modeled after the Japan Micom Car Rally competition, which has been held annually for 14 years since 1996.
