The RX66T was launched in November 2018 as a successor of RX62T/RX62G/RX63T, optimized for inverter control. The RX-T series, including this RX66T, has been adopted mainly in outdoor units of air conditioners and industrial inverters and is highly evaluated in the field of inverter control. In recent years, it is getting adopted in power supply control applications such as UPS, solar inverters, and EV chargers as well.

Renesas has repeatedly launched high-quality products meeting customers’ needs to contribute to their innovations. This time, we have got a request from a long-time RX customer that they wanted a high-performance device ideal for single motor control, as a next-generation platform. The RX66T is an ideal option in terms of high performance and high functionality. However, in this case, a small package (48-pin) is required to place components within the existing constrained space, and we had only a 64-pin package as the smallest package in the RX66T lineup.

Motivated by the customer’s needs, we decided to develop the RX66T 48-pin product. The RX66T has a resource for three-phase complementary PWM output that enables simultaneous control of up to four motors, and we have arranged the layout of the input/output for the 48-pin package to be optimized for single motor control. The 48-pin package is 7mm x 7mm in size, and it is possible to improve the performance of the system while keeping/utilizing its space-saving where low-end/middle-range products used to be adopted.

In addition, the RX66T MCUs support 5V with noise immunity, and the RX family proprietary RXv3 CPU core achieves 943 CoreMark at 160MHz, realizing high performance. In the 48-pin package group, the analog/digital conversion unit required for motor control incorporates the 3ch simultaneous sample and hold circuits, is capable of simultaneously sampling the 3-phase motor current.

The RX66T not only offers high performance, but also reduces the number of peripheral components by utilizing its internal functions such as programmable gain amplifier (PGA) and comparator, and has the capability to realize secure firmware updates and encrypted communication using the Trusted Secure IP in the MCU.

The RX66T 48-pin product group has already started sample shipment and mass production orders and is expected to be fully distributed in the market officially this autumn.

This time, we could contribute to the development of our customer’s next-generation platform which led to the expansion of our RX-T product portfolio. We will continue to contribute to customer innovation by delivering high-quality products that meet customers’ needs.

Please look forward to the future development of the Renesas RX family expansion! For more details on the RX66T, visit the RX66T group page.
