The 5P49V5935 is a programmable clock generator intended for high-performance consumer, networking, industrial, computing, and data communications applications. Configurations may be stored in on-chip One-Time Programmable (OTP) memory or changed using an I²C interface. This is Renesas' fifth generation of programmable clock technology (VersaClock® 5). The 5P49V5935, by default, uses an integrated 25MHz crystal as an input reference. It also has a redundant external clock input. A glitchless manual switchover function allows the selection of either input reference during normal operation.
Two select pins allow up to four different configurations to be programmed and accessible using processor GPIOs or bootstrapping. The different selections may be used for different operating modes (full function, partial function, partial power-down), regional standards (US, Japan, Europe), or system production margin testing. The device may be configured to use one of two I²C addresses to allow multiple devices to be used in a system.

Patrice Cater and Baljit Chandhoke introduce IDT's (acquired by Renesas) VersaClock 5 with an integrated crystal, emphasizing its compact design, ease of integration, and cost efficiency. They showcase its performance and versatility on an evaluation board, highlighting the device's ability to eliminate external frequency tuning components and its low power consumption. Available in two models, further details are accessible on Renesas's Programmable Clocks page.

Patrice Cater: Hi, I'm Patrice Cater of IDT, and I'd like to tell you about the latest iteration of the VersaClock 5 programmable clock generators. This addition to our broad portfolio of timing devices is really unique, in that these programmable clock generators feature an integrated crystal. This means engineers won't have to spend development time integrating the crystal themselves or tuning the frequency, and it means reduced board space because the entire device, including crystal, comes in a compact 4 x 4 mm package. And finally, the integrated crystal means fewer components for a smaller bill of materials. So, you get all the benefits of the original VersaClock 5, best-in-class jitter performance at half the power of competing devices. And the integrated crystal is the icing on the cake. Let's hear it from our product expert.
Baljit Chandhoke: Thanks, Patrice, for the great introduction of our new VersaClock 5 with integrated crystal. Now I'm going to show you on an evaluation board, what we are talking about. As you see on this evaluation board, the VersaClock 5 is really small. It's 4 mm x 4 mm, and as you see, there is no crystal. So the X1 is blank, so the crystal is inside the device. This enables our customers to have a comprehensive solution with no external components needed for frequency tuning. It also enables them to save on board space and lower the cost of BOM. In addition, this product, as you will see, is very versatile and it can be used for many different applications since it has the great performance of 0.7 picoseconds RMS phase jitter from 12k to 20 megahertz, and extremely low power with 30 milliamps core current consumption.
Patrice Cater: The VersaClock 5 devices with integrated crystals comes in two flavors, the 5p49v5933a which can generate two output frequencies, and the 5p49v5935a which can generate up to four. For more information, visit the IDT website or give Baljit a call.
