Overview
Description
The USB PD with Turbo Boost Development Kit is used for developing applications with Universal Serial Bus Power Delivery (USB PD). The kit utilizes Renesas' R9A02G011 USB PD 3.0 controller, ISL81401 bidirectional buck-boost voltage regulator, and ISL9238 battery charger controller. The input voltage is supported by a USB PD AC adapter in the 5V to 20V range. However, the board is designed to support beyond 20V applications; the buck-boost regulator included in this design will work as a turbo boost USB PD voltage to the desired higher voltage. Voltage as high as 32V can be achieved.
Renesas R9A02G011 USB PD controller is based on the Universal Serial Bus (USB) Power Delivery Specification Revision 3.0 and USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification Revision 1.3. The USB PD controller performs negotiation for more current and/or higher voltages over the USB cable (VBUS) than are defined in the USB 2.0, USB 3.0, or BC1.2 specifications, and controls circuitry to select the local power source or power sink.
The ISL81401 4-switch synchronous buck-boost controller with peak and average current sensing and monitoring at both ends provides the turbo boost function to boost the USB PD voltage to a higher voltage.
The ISL9238C is a buck-boost Narrow Output Voltage DC (NVDC) charger that provides NVDC charging for 2-, 3-, or 4-cell Li-ion batteries and supports kick start application where inrush current becomes very critical during power up and the supplementary from the battery will avoid system collapse due to inadequate power.
Features
- Takes input power from a wide range of DC power sources.
- Allows output voltage above 20V and still keeps within USB-C power rating.
- Enables turbo boost from the energy stored in the battery to the load, keeping within the USB PD max power range (e.g., utilize battery power to provide supplementary power during motor kick-start stage and to prevent hitting inrush current by the current limit of the USB Type-C adapter).
