In Booth #774: Renesas Power Delivery Controller Solutions and Type-C Connector Design Prototype Speed Battery Charging Times, Reduce Development Costs

2014年9月8日

Santa Clara, Calif., September 8, 2014 — Renesas Electronics America, a leading technology innovator of advanced semiconductor solutions, is showcasing the latest USB technologies to simplify and speed USB charging for portable devices at the Intel Developer Forum (IDF), September 9-11, 2014 at the Moscone West Convention Center in San Francisco.

Learn more about how new USB specifications are defining next-generation USB connectors and power delivery solutions for portable device charging and connectivity in the Renesas booth #774, SuperSpeed USB Community.

As part of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), Renesas plays a driving role in defining standards for and promoting mainstream adoption of one of the most popular technologies for connecting and powering consumer devices. With the introduction of standards like the recently completed Type-C connector and Power Delivery (PD) 2.0 specifications, the USB-IF community enhances user experience with greater mobile charging convenience for thinner devices and faster charging capabilities.

USB Power Delivery Controller Solution

Based on the USB Power Delivery Technology, the Renesas Power Delivery Controller (uPD720250) enables USB charging with intelligent and flexible power management functions. The PD controller solution supports up to 100W (5A at 20V) power over a USB PD cable, significantly reducing battery charging times and offering greater convenience whether users are charging small mobile devices or power-intense devices like smartphones, cameras, notebooks, and tablets.

Power Delivery Controller Design Support PD Version 2.0

Based on PD version 2.0, the Renesas Power Delivery Controller Design prototype demonstrates the use of the new Type-C connectors, where the smaller, thinner size is convenient for use with portable devices. The USB Type-C specification also expands the capabilities of the USB interface into other vertical markets, like automotive and industrial, that will require high-speed wired local connectivity and scalable power charging.

Leadership in USB

As a member of the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) since 1996, Renesas Electronics (formerly NEC Electronics) has played a leading role both in defining USB standards and in developing USB technology. In April 2000 (then NEC Electronics), the company launched the uPD720100 (the world's first USB 2.0-compliant host controller chip), the uPD720110 (the world's first USB 2.0-compliant hub controller chip) and an extensive lineup of other USB devices, and has earned a reputation for delivering dedicated customer service and high quality.

In May 2009, Renesas Electronics (then NEC Electronics) introduced the industry's first USB 3.0 xHCI host controller and, only after four months of its release, the company became the world's first to earn the "Certified SuperSpeed USB (USB 3.0)" certification from the USB-IF, and also started mass production of the uPD720200 host controller. Renesas contributed to the USB-IF certification tests, providing the organization with the host controller products as the platform for other USB 3.0 device certification.
