Sub-GHz/Wi-SUN Transceivers

Renesas offers Sub-GHz wireless communication devices with high RF characteristics and low power consumption. The 860/920MHz band is ideal for applications requiring extensive communication networks, such as smart meters, smart cities, digital signage, and monitoring systems, due to its features such as long-distance communication, bypassing of radio obstacles, and low radio interference with other devices. Renesas has a number of solutions to help customers easily deploy Renesas products, including wireless communication evaluation kits, a Wi-SUN software stack, RF drivers, reference designs, and more.

Sub-GHz Wireless Communications

Sub-GHz wireless communications technology uses radio waves below 1GHz and has the following features compared to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), which use the 2.4GHz band.

Wi-SUN Alliance

With the spread of the Internet of Things (IoT), wireless networks are used to relay data back and forth between devices that are equipped with communication functions, and network system complexity and scale are expected to increase. The Wi-SUN Alliance drives the standardization and creation of profiles for communication protocols that can ensure interconnectivity in these diversifying networks. Renesas has been a strong promoter of research and development and international standardization for the Wi-SUN Alliance since its establishment and develops solutions that support the protocols of the Wi-SUN Alliance.

Starter Kits

These evaluation boards have been certified for technical standard conformance for Japan and CE certification for the European Union, and are used by the Certified Test Bed Unit (CTBU) authorized by the Wi-SUN Alliance.

Data Concentration Unit

The Neona data concentration unit powered by Renesas RZ/A1H MPU delivers the lowest power consumption at 400MHz and provides 10MB of on-chip SRAM. With its high-performance MPU, the unit can support various meter interfaces, such as Sub-GHz RF with Renesas RL78/G1H and NB-PLC with Renesas R9A06G037, and MDAS/Cloud interfaces.

Smart Meter, Data Concentration Unit

The Inesh smart meter is available in 1-phase and 3-phase based on Class 1.0 and IEC standards. Powered by Renesas RL78/I1C and RX21A MCUs, Inesh can develop a compact smart meter delivering accurate measurements.

The data concentration unit is powered by Renesas RX210, providing high-performance and large-capacity memory.

Both the smart meter and data concentration unit use the same RF communication module powered by RL78/G1H, and PLC communication module powered by R9A06G037 delivering high-speed communication with large memory, and can support a wide range of meter interfaces and MDAS/Cloud interfaces.

The ICD hybrid meter is available in 1-phase based on Class 1.0 and IEC standards. Powered by a Renesas Synergy™ Arm®-based MCU, the hybrid meter delivers high performance supporting STS prepaid and postpaid functionalities, ideal for the IoT market.

The built-in communication module interface consists of the RF communication module powered by RL78/G1H, and a PLC communication module powered by R9A06G037 delivering high-speed communication with large memory, and supporting a wide range of meter interfaces and MDAS/Cloud interfaces.
